The Prickly Pear Café has been an Ann Arbor favorite since first opening in 1991. The menu features may southwest inspired specialties. Mexican favorites are given a unique twist including many vegetarian options and outstanding soups and salads. The butternut squash soup is famous locally, while the buffalo meat enchiladas even merited mention in Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps’ autobiography.
Still owned and managed by the original founders and many long time staff, the Prickly Pear has a family-feel appreciated by many patrons.
Seating only 55 guests in the main dining room, the Prickly Pear Café is unable to accept reservations. However, convenient pagers allow guests to explore the many shops downtown or relax with a drink or coffee at any of the establishments along Main street while waiting for a table. Once inside wooden booths along the side of the room offer a cozy getaway from the bustle of the intimate space. While observing the eclectic décor don’t forget to look up at the hand painted tin ceiling. The restaurant doubles in size with the addition of outdoor seating during warm weather. People watch on the street or discover the hidden courtyard in back. Tucked behind the building and through the kitchen, this secret garden is one of the most popular outdoor dining spots in Ann Arbor.
Whether coming to town for a special event or just a night on the town, The Prickly Pear’s generous portions ensure no one leaves hungry.
